Dear
Meet eleven-year old Jess, who flew before she walked. In a storm of confusion, Jess drops underground and meets a community of burrowing animals that understand her better than her own family. Please consider representing my debut middle grade novel, JESS UNDERGROUND, contemporary magical realism, complete at 56,000 words, series potential. For readers who enjoyed Alison Green’s, A Bird Will Soar and Erin Entrada Kelly’s. Weird Kid, without any goo.
Jess’ mother broke her promise. To an eleven-year old, promises are everything. Like rules, break one and trouble follows. Jess decides her mother died or she’d be home. She tells her friend, Olivia, her mother will reincarnate. They wait for her arrival. But Grandma sets traps and since Mom got bad grades at being human she might return as a gopher. Jess and Olivia vow to save the gophers.
Jess keeps her underground friends secret, though she hates lies and secrets. She flaps and twirls under stress, but with the animals, watches and listens, finds her inner calm. Tails, ear cups and facial gestures teach Jess to understand the world of humans. While Jess blames her father for everything, she doesn’t notice he’s sad. Then he falls in love and wants them to move away. Jess may never see her mother again or her first friend.
Setting up interactions and magical moments for Jess’ books, I gained new insights about neurodiverse children, discovered joy and appreciation for my own atypical children’s efforts and successes.
Retired from teaching preschool and elementary school, as a professor training teachers, and curriculum development specialist, I hold a Master’s in Special Education. Twelve-year member of a critique group, SCBWI, P2P, and Manuscript Academy, attend conferences and webinars online. Essays and short stories appear in Discretionary Love, Brain, Child, Full Grown People, Brevity Blog, Wising Up. “A World for Jess” and “Letters to Montana,” at NancyKayBrown.com.
Thank you for your attention, Nancy Kay Brown.
