Thank you for any and all feedback. But a special shoutout to anyone offering feedback that doesn't make me question every decision I've ever made in my life!
For nine-year-old Winnie Candy, Meet the Author Day at Culpepper Elementary, where she is a third grader and her parents are both teachers, is supposed to be the best day ever. That’s because the author they are meeting is none other than her very own Aunt Lauren. Winnie’s high expectations are crushed when Aunt Lauren reads an excerpt from her latest book, revealing Winnie’s most embarrassing moment in the process.
As the youngest member of the family, Winnie is shocked to learn that Aunt Lauren has a long history of using the Candy family as “inspiration” for her books. When one of Aunt Lauren’s humiliating moments is revealed in a mysterious poem, Winnie wonders if she’ll be able to get even with her famous aunt. What would Aunt Lauren’s fans say if they knew she had once walked on stage at a writer’s conference with the back of her skirt tucked into her underwear?
Aunt Lauren finds the poem and decides to do some damage control by sharing her own embarrassing moment at a large speaking event. Privately, she vows to get revenge on the poem’s author.
In the end, Aunt Lauren has an idea for a school contest that will stop Winnie from being the butt of jokes while giving the author fodder for her next book. Will Aunt Lauren really turn over a new leaf? Only time will tell.
WINNIE CANDY is a standalone, humorous MG novel. It is complete at 37,000 words. Winnie is a spunky, imaginative girl who would be best friends with Ramona Quimby, Fudge Hatcher, and the Penderwick sisters. Like Ramona, Fudge, and the Penderwicks, Winnie has series potential. The book also comes with thought-provoking discussion questions suitable for classrooms or individual readers. The story deals with universal truths such as the complexity of family relationships and the need for resilience–without being preachy or syrupy sweet.
