I'm in the process of revising a YA contemp and would love some fresh eyes on it when I'm done. Note: It's currently a mess so it'll be at least a few months before it's ready to send.
I'll post a thrown-together query below to give you an idea of the plot and if you're interested, msg me on here, twitter @ jenpickrell or email jenpickrell(at)gmail(dot)com
Fifteen-year-old Emma is trying to save her cousin, Bastian, from their family's history of alcoholism. She hates the surly, spiteful person he becomes when he drinks. He even makes threats about leaving town and never coming back, but Emma knows he's not serious. They're practically brother and sister, and siblings wouldn't abandon each other. But then Bastian turns eighteen and leaves town without a word.
Emma is hurt and overwhelmed with worry, not just about her cousin, but about his unstable parents. She's determined to help them hold it together until Bastian comes home, but it's a thankless job that leaves her desperate for a distraction. Enter Chase Lewis, recent transfer student and lover of bad movies. Whenever he's around, Emma remembers how to laugh and let go. After fifteen years of family chaos, it's nice to have a conversation instead of a screaming match.
Just as Emma is settling into her newfound happiness, the calm is shattered by Bastian's return. Not only is he drinking more heavily than ever, he's harboring a secret that affects Chase. In the past, Emma would have protected her cousin, no matter the cost to her conscious, but as Bastian spirals out of control, she is forced to decide whether family loyalty means staying quiet or speaking up.
