On Sunday, Gemmy woke up bright and cheery. She put on sparkly leggings and a twirly top. She danced through brunch, hiking and family game night, leaving trails of glitter dust. In her dreams, she whirled through the night just like the twelfth dancing princess.
On Monday, Gemmy slept late. She wore a hoodie and yoga pants that curved over her sleepy spine. She stretched out the pattern blocks and made a track for the sleeper train. At bedtime, she curled in a cozy pose and counted clouds.
On Tuesday, Gemmy grew industrious. She wore rubber boots and gardening gloves. She dug through twenty-three picture books and sixteen paintings. But...she also transplanted the classroom plant and extracted the seeds out of everyone’s snacks.
On Wednesday, Gemmy felt friendly, so she wore Velcro jeans and a t-shirt with words on it. She stuck tight to her buddies during centers, partnered-up during discovery time and sang campfire songs with the class outside. But...certain friends stuck a little too close, all day long.
Thursday was confusing: Gemmy was sort of happy, sort of angry, sort of excited, sort of everything—all mixed up like puzzle pieces. Her feelings were mismatched and she did not know what to wear. What felt best on top was her tankini, and what felt best on the bottom were snow pants. But… all day long her bottoms were too swishy and her top was too stretchy. Her arms goose-bumped and her legs felt feverish.
Gemmy muddled through Thursday. Her pants stifled the words during quiet reading time. Her tankini inspired water fights at the sink. “My clothes are taking over!” Gemmy wailed.
