Every year, all the bugs have a big flying race. If a bug has wings, they can enter.
I can’t. I don’t have two wings. I only have one, and no one can fly with one.
Flying is impossible. I’m stuck on the ground. I’m stuck watching.
I can do awesome spins on the ground. Sometimes, I can do them in the air. Okay, well, not really. It doesn’t matter, because spinning isn’t flying.
Willy the worm laughs when I try to fly.
Greg the grasshopper says, “Jump rope with me.”
My big brother shakes his head and smiles. “You can cheer me on, Flynn.”
Mom and Dad hug me. “You are a winner no matter what.”
Disappointment burns in my belly every time they say that. It doesn’t make sense. How can I be a winner if I don’t try?
The sadness hits me like a fallen branch. It’s not like I want to win. I’d be perfectly happy with last place.
My friend, Sally the Spider, doesn’t understand. “So what? I can’t fly.”
“You’re a spider, and spiders don’t fly. Every fly can fly but me,” Flynn says.
“I’m sorry. I wish I could help,” is all Sally can say.
The day before the big race, I sit on the park bench and watch the other bugs practice.
All of a sudden, a shadow towers over me. A giant! A giant sits down. Please, don’t let him see me. My heart beats faster than my brother’s wings. The giant opens a book. I’m so relieved that my body feels like jelly
The pictures! My mouth drops open. Robots flying through the air AND in space! The best part is that none of them have wings.
An idea strikes me and I grin. There’s no time to waste. I run as fast as I can to Sally’s tree.
“Sally!” I yell.
Sally rides a cobweb down. “What, Flynn?”
“I know how I can fly in the big race. Please, let me have some web,” I say.
Sally gets to work, and soon my arms are full of cobwebs.
It takes me all night.
First, I glue sticks together.
Then I add a paperclip I found in the park.
Next, I tie it all together with Sally’s cobwebs.
Last, I put the battery on.
It looks so cool! If my family wasn’t sleeping I would dance.
There is no way I can sleep now. I’m not even tired and even if I was, I don’t want to. I wanted to see if my robot wing works. No, I don’t WANT to, I NEED to.
I put my wing on and race to the garden. I press the ON button and my robot wing starts moving. Yes!
I jump into the air, ready to fly. Instead, I hit a branch!
Maybe I need to be higher up. A tree will do! I climb it and walk to the edge of the branch. It bounces with each step.
My heart thunders as I stare down at the ground. If I fall, I could break a leg! Or worse!
