Cadence slid along the shadows surrounding the Reflection Willow of the Ice Elves. The White Steel guards were due to return in three minutes. She needed to steal the orb quickly.
Pulling her obsidian dagger from behind her back, she stretched across the mirrored ground. With her other palm, she drew a large circle in the air and took a deep breath.
The familiar smell of campfires and pine filled her senses as the portal appeared. Sparks scattered from its lines, and an obscured, flat surface gleamed through the opening.
Her boot paused mid-air as she was tugged back by the elbow. “Cade, wait.” Crystal blue eyes the same color as the ice mirrors walling the Ice Elves’ sacred grounds blinked at her. The irises danced in her portal’s yellow light.
She blinked and stifled a groan. “For being the heir to the Assassin’s Guild, you sure are timid, Kalihan.” She extracted the sleeve of her fur jacket out of his gloved fingers.
The corners of her best friend’s lips curled as he tipped his head in the direction of a young Ice Elf, an obvious White Steel warrior-in-training, who had stepped into the clearing. “I heard him.” Kalihan tapped his earlobe. “The heir to the Assassin’s Guild is given some special… extrasensory gifts.”
“So, you’re cheating.” She shrugged and knew her comment would grate him.
Kal’s smirk was nothing short of vengeful. “Says the girl who can skip from place to place with a wave of her hand.”
Cade rolled her eyes, but she muttered, “Thanks, I guess.”
“Shall I dispose of him for you?” Kal asked innocently. He lifted his own obsidian dagger and poised to throw it. “That is why you brought me along, correct? For the dirty work?”
She backed into his shoulder, making him stumble with a muffled oomph. “Oh, I’m sorry, were you standing there?”
He drew back his knife. “Do you want me to eliminate him or not?”
“First of all, I did not BRING you along. You followed me through at the last second.” She drew a reverse circle across the edges of her portal and closed it. “Second, we’re not killing anybody today, your highness. This is nothing more than a robbery.”
