Jude eyed Ms. Shoulders, his sixth-grade Language Arts teacher. Perched on her chair with her back to him, she was working with a small group of students at the opposite end of the class. Perfect, he thought as he returned to his phone. On the screen stood a knight holding a sword at the edge of a dark pool. Suddenly, the water began to churn. From under the surface glowed a set of menacing eyes. Next to them appeared two more. “A hydra!” he whispered. Just then one of the serpents lifted out of the water and peered down at the knight. It lunged. Whip, wham, The knight pivoted and sliced off its head. The appendage thrashed wildly, gushing blood. Gross! Jude wrinkled his nose at the red splatter covering his avatar.
Like a missle a second serpent exploded out of the water. Press, slide went Jude’s frantic fingers. The knight drove his sword upward, catching the incoming hydra under the jaw. As he did, a third struck his left side, sinking its long fangs into his arm. The knight flipped the sword in his hand and shoved it into the hydra’s eye. Jude’s phone vibrated madly as the serpent released the knight and plunged back in the pool. He scanned the water, his knight’s sword ready. That’s three serpents, only one left, he thought. Just then from behind him, the final head lashed out. Surprised, Jude jerked the knight around. Whip went his sword and-
“Phone!” Came a shrill voice, making everyone on that side of the room jump. “Give it to me!” The words struck Jude’s heart like one of the hydra’s fangs. He looked up and was met with Ms. Shoulders’ stern face. With a sigh, he held it out. “That’s the second time this week.”
A faint Nooo and splash sounded as Ms. Shoulders swept up the phone with her slender, ebony hand. She held it halfway over her head and slid gracefully between two desks before depositing it on her own. Jude folded his arms under his head and slumped on the desk, looking like a sad puppy.
“You’re going to have to ask your parents to come get it now,” she added as she picked her way around more students and scurried off towards the upraised hand at the front of the room.
Lucy Spitzer, who sat at the table group in front of Jude, shot him a sneering look then wagged her finger as she mouthed the words, “busted! You lose!” Muffled laughter erupted from the two girls sitting next to her.
Jude groaned and covered his head. This meant one of his moms was going to have to pick it up after school. Since both worked late today, he probably wouldn’t get it back for… at least the rest of his life, he concluded woefully. Not to mention the grounding he would get for being a repeat offender.
